A Good Year for Modest Cothing

This year, we've seen a number of features about modest clothing. Newspapers like the NY Times have written about the subject a few times and it seems that modest clothing stores are popping up online more and more.

One thing I love about modest clothing is that it's something that anyone can wear. You don't have to be a Muslim, Jewish, or LDS person to wear modest clothing. To wear modest clothing, you just have to care about covering your body and not showing it off to the world.

There are many different reasons why women choose to wear modest clothing. Some women wear it in observance of their religious beliefs. Others wear modest clothing because they believe that it's immoral to do otherwise. Still others wear modest clothing just because they prefer it over more revealing clothes.

Religious groups have the most defined guidelines on modest clothing. Muslim women must wear modest clothing and head scarves that cover everything but their faces and hands. Jewish women, LDS women, and women of other religions have their own guidelines for modest clothing.

Along with these guidelines comes different terms that each religious group uses to identify their modest clothing styles. For example, some modest clothing items that are related to Muslim women are abayas, jilbabs, and hijabs. These are Arabic terms that describe Islamic modest clothing items. Other examples include words like Tznius which describe modest clothing for Jewish women.

As hemlines are getting shorter and clothes are getting tighter, it seems that it would be very difficult to find modest clothing. But as I stated above, there are many modest clothing shops online. Most of them focus on adhering to modest clothing guidelines for specific religious groups. For example: Her Modesty focuses on Islamic modest clothing, Funky Frum focuses on Jewish modest clothing and Shabby Apple focuses on LDS modest clothing.

Ultimately, it really doesn't matter what religious group you prescribe to. If you like modest clothing styles, you can shop anywhere you want. Just keep your beliefs in mind when shopping and you'll find plenty of modest clothing styles to suit you.
